How to choose your next handbag

Some women love shoes, some jewelry. Me, I am more of a handbag person. A handbag can absolutely make or break the outfit. So whether you are recently out of school and want to invest in a new handbag appropriate for your awesome corporate life or you want to expand your wardrobe a bit and don’t know where to start, read on.

This handy info graph helps you put a name to all the common styles of handbags. If I absolutely had to choose one style that would be worth it and be easily incorporated into different outfits, it would be a tote in a neutral color (I love tan or burgundy). You can use it as a work bag during the week and pair it with jeans and a tee for a casual outfit. So if you are looking for an investment bag, this is probably your best bet.

Material and color are important too. Leather always looks better and lasts more. Muted and classic colors such as browns, deep reds, grays will go with more outfits compared to bright colors. Understated logos and hardware help make a bag look timeless and more expensive than it is.

No matter what your price range, there are options. Some of the affordable options are Zara, Michael Kors and Tory Burch and there are so many summer sales on right now. Here are some options under $300.

High fashion brands such as Prada, Saint Laurent and Burberry also make beautiful totes.

The second bag I would choose is a clutch. You take it to a club or a casual brunch with friends. And my recommendation for the perfect wardrobe trifecta is a messenger/ bucket bag/ cross-body. Something small and stylish that can be worn with a cute dress on one shoulder or as a cross body with jeans and a blouse. Here are two cute bags, both from Zara (and both on sale!).

What’s your one go to bag?

  1. Brilliant article. Just what I needed !
The roomy ‘bucket’ bag I used to use so much has expired. So I’m using my rectangular handbag for work which has quite limited space. While I like the fact that, this way I’m constantly pruning and throwing out stuff I know isn’t absolutely essential, I do end up carrying my umbrella and anything extra in my hand. A tote will be a good buy for me at this time.
Thanks for the lovely article Shruti! We love you !
